Sydney, Australia
Picture, if you will, an older Toyota van abandoned in traffic, its stubby front-end that much more stunted, one turnlight hanging by a wire, a layer of shattered glass sprinkled on the street. This was my taxi from the airport until stupid driving and a rain soaked road sent us careening into another van. And people always warn me about the 'unsafe' Third World. It’s a mental image, too, because my constant Canon companion mysteriously disappeared earlier that day along with 2 weeks worth of photos. My first day in Australia brought little joy. However, the sun soon appeared and the city revealed some of its glory: lovely parks, architecture, museums and a stunning waterfront. I was especially lucky to be spoiled by my cousins, the MacIldowie clan, and to see Steve and Lili again.
