These guys had it together. Tikal is gorgeous. The largest of many impressive Maya 'cities' in the Mexico-Guatemala frontier, Tikal was built between 300BC and 900AD. A major cultural and population centre, it was mysteriously abandoned by 1100. It was "re-discovered" in 1848 and re-stored in the 1950s onward. The site is huge, stretching for miles with dozens of temples and structures still obscured by thick jungle (and mosquitoes).
