How successful were the Beijing Olympics? No idea. I can tell you, however, that my quite-OK double-room-with-shared-bath cost $26/night; during the games, the rate was to be $260/night. The government already had the cheering policy well designed: clap twice, give the thumbs-up, clap twice more and punch the air with both arms. Apparently, this is in-line with international sporting cheers. Visitors will be surprised to find few people here speak any English which can be a challenge. Still, if you need just one reason to visit, it is the cheap beer. A yummy, cold 600ml bottle costs only $0.50 and the more you drink, the more colorful and culturally complex China becomes. A definite win-win.
