Siem Reap, Cambodia

Cambodia is home to Angkor, one of the world's most impressive ancient temple complexes. Once a sprawling stone city, the area was the centre of the great Khmer Empire; dozens of elaborate Hindu/Buddhist temples were built on this site from the 9th to 12th centuries. The best known structure is Angkor Wat, a massive temple surrounded by moat after moat after moat - complete with towering domes and fabulous inscribed carvings: its image appears on the national flag. Siem Reap is a great place to explore, even in the dizzying heat and blazing sun.
