Aquariums
One of the stranger experiences in Indonesia is the pushy desire of local tourists to take photos together with you, no matter where or when. One late night, while waiting for a 1am flight, a giddy group of girls shook us awake, pulled us off our row of hard seats, stood us together, unfurled a tour banner and snapped a few shots. The reason, it seems to Lonely Planet, “is similar to why people tap on aquarium fish tanks – they want to be recognized by an exotic being and provoke some kind of reaction.” Such behavior has been uncomfortably common in all countries since: kids shout at you, strangers want to shake hands, people try to converse with their three words of English, and, of course, there is the constant staring and gawking and pointing – particularly bad in India and China. Charming? Sure, just without the charming part.
