Built in 1648 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his wife, the Taj is an amazing example of Mughal style and ingenuity. Not to be confused with the Mongols (yurts plonked on the grassy steppe of Mongolia), the Persian-speaking Islamic Mughals were Afghanistan's greatest export, conquering India with impressive armies, architecture, scientific knowledge and progressive rule. Agra is full of cool Mughal sites like the massive Red Fort and other white marbled dome mausoleums. Definitely the tourist jewel of India and a true wonder of the world, the Taj will retain its mysterious wonder for me.
